Application of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Treating Pet Diseases

In recent years, the application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the veterinary field has gradually gained attention. Although its clinical application in human medicine began as early as the 1960s, its use in pet medicine is still in its early stages. Its principle is similar to that in human medicine: by injecting high-concentration oxygen into the animal's body under high pressure, it helps improve the postoperative condition of sick pets, increasing the cure rate and reducing the disability rate. Furthermore, from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine's concept of "returning qi to its origin," hyperbaric oxygen therapy also has a certain rehabilitative effect on diseases of the respiratory, urinary, and neurological systems in sick pets. Therefore, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is often used in conjunction with acupuncture and other therapies to treat various pet ailments, such as acute brain injury, paralysis, limb weakness, and urinary and fecal incontinence.

However, despite its advantages in treating certain diseases, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is expensive, has limited application scenarios, and is complex to operate, resulting in its limited use in pet hospitals and clinics. Nevertheless, with the continuous development of the pet medical industry, especially the rise of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for pets is gradually increasing. Online, an increasing number of pet owners are sharing their successful experiences of treating their sick pets using hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

While hyperbaric oxygen therapy offers advantages in treating certain diseases, veterinarians generally agree that it is not suitable for all conditions. Before using hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a veterinarian must assess the pet's condition to determine if the treatment is necessary. Furthermore, accidents involving hyperbaric oxygen therapy have occurred; therefore, both veterinarians and pet owners must exercise caution and strictly adhere to operating procedures to prevent incidents.
